Sud-denly Famous

Chill baby!!

Hansi ke Phuwaarey kitab mein se page number 45 se oopar se doosra joke sunaa raha hu.....

Anybody heard "Sud" on radio recently? Yes, the same fellow who drags his voice and appears to enjoy jokes that normal people wont even widen their lips slightly for. Whats surprizing is that people generally look forward to hearing this guy drawl! What could be the possible reason for everyone being "attracted" to a person like Sud? I have even heard that some advertizing agencies are looking at signing Sud for their radio ads!!!! Granted that he has a distinct voice and a different presentation style, but whats so different about him? What is his X-Factor?

One week to go

It has been 5 weeks that I have been in US now. I am staying in Hanover and work in Linthicum, MD. The weather has been absolutely amazing. Nice sun and intermittent showers has made my stay bearable.

The hotel is right in front of Arundel Mills Mall. This mall is HUGE. The first time I took a round of the place, my legs were aching. Its a different thing that I havent exercised in a long time :). Anyways, the mall is a good place to eat and shop, but after some time you tend to get bored of going to the same place everyday. You know how it is like staying away from home? Office ends early unlike in India where it is blasphemy leaving office early (read on time) and one has to eventually face the ire of a disgruntled boss after a couple of early exits. (Well for some of my married friends, an estranged wife is better than an angry boss) So when, in US, you come back from office...what do you do? Watch a couple of comedy serials, spend time on internet, browsing sites for electronics products you are never gonna buy and then watch some more television. Also, remember from the last few lines, there is that option of going to the HUGE mall. Its a tough choice you know. What to do? I chose watching TV.

Aah yes...you have to eat too. So either you cook your food or like me, you just heat pre-cooked MTRs, Aashirwaads, Priyas, Kohinoors and Ashoks. For the uninitiated, these are the names of export quality pre-cooked Indian food...from India. The problem is that none of the brands taste the same. So if you are a punjabi who has been born and brought up in North India...go for Kohinoor or MTR, in that order. If you get a chance to have it, you'll find every Priya preparation tastes the same. Yessir, there will be no difference between meethi aaloo and raajma and the food is partially cooked. I never knew anyone could make everything taste the same. But the Indian store fellow was nice enough to exchange all the Priyas I bought for something else. Ganesh Stores is what I am talking about. Run by a Gujju fellow who knows his trade and works hard on customer service. Somebody tell the Google fellows to update their map to include the right address of the store.

Eating is my favourite thing so I am gonna write about it a little more. I had a chance to give one of my best friends, Mahesh, a visit at his amazing home in Clarksburg. Its a nice, clean and quiet place. Nice and clean cause it is a new neighbourhod and quiet cause it is expensive and so not a lot of people can afford a house there. His mom is a gem of a person. She was nice enough to treat a poor soul like me with loads of homemade food. I had white chole and pav bhaji and samosas and pizzas. WOW, it was a treat! Life was good then!

To get to Mahesh's place I decided to take public transportation. I took 3 hours to reach a place that was 45 min away by road. This is how, I took the shuttle service from my hotel to the international airport (BWI), then I took the WMATA bus service to Greenbelt metro station and from there I changed two metros to reach Shady grove. Even after that, Mahesh had to drive for 10 min to reach the metro station. Talk about jalebi. But the plus part is that the entire route is well mapped and you can do research on internet before thinking of travelling like this.

At Mahesh's place I got a chance to learn poker. Learnt different types of games that can be played and how to bluff and when to take calculated chances. Got some help from him and Payal (Mahesh's wife) though. Even won $7. Not bad, huh?

I even got a chance to go for the Orioles and Blue Jays game at Baltimore. The stadium looked like it does in the movies. Although the stadium was not full, few fans a turkey sandwhich and lots of beer does the trick. You enjoy the game even more. Learnt a couple of pitching styles and saw the convincing Orioles win after one of the players decided to steal a base.

So now to the reason why I came to US. There was some training that my company had in mind for me. It has been 5 weeks and I got a chance to start with the training today. It not too much fin though. Involved a little bit of manual labour.

Thats that! And I am visiting New York and Atlantic city tomorrow. More about it later.
